Around the Americas Sailing Voyage

AROUND THE AMERICAS

Around the Americas, a 13-month sailing expedition intended to gather scientific data and raise awareness about the plight of the oceans, will travel 25,000 miles all the way around North and South America.

The expedition is gathering data on such things as conditions in the Arctic Ocean and how dust, smoke and moisture in the atmosphere can decrease the amount of sunlight that reaches the Earth. UW scientists are leads for five of the eight science projects on board; shipboard educator for the first leg of the trip is Zeta Strickland of the Pacific Science Center.

WGHA Ambassadors Teachers Talk Global Health

I've had the honor of working as a Curriculum Design consultant for the Washington Global Health Alliance Ambassadors Program for the past six months. In that role, I have been coaching a group of 11 teachers as they develop a global health curriculum for 11th grade chemistry, advanced algebra, and U.S. history courses. Here's a little taste of the project, and of this amazing team of teachers:

Free Workshop: Climate Change & the N. Cascades

Climate Change and the North Cascades

Here's a fabulous opportunity to learn from the pros about the impacts of climate change on our local environs. To recognize and celebrate all you have done to help your students understand the implications of climate change, teachers who have an interest in adding to their knowledge of the topic are invited to join us for a special FREE one-day field trip in the North Cascades.

Five FREE CLOCK Hours AVAILABLE!

Experience the wilderness setting of Ross Lake, a fjord-like jewel inthe international Upper Skagit River valley, and learn about the cultural and geographical history that has crisscrossed this remote terrain for eons. From a comfortable perch onboard the 30-foot Ross Mule, an open decked boat, you will hear vivid accounts about the incredible geology and history of the region from subject matter experts Jon Riedel, National Park Service geologist, Bob Mierendorf, National Park Service archaeologist and Captain Gerry Cook, the most senior employee at North Cascades National Park and an accomplished artist and naturalist.

You will also learn about how climate change is impacting the glaciers of the North Cascades National Park and hear from Puget Sound Energy's Energy Education staff about some education programs that could help you deliver the message about climate issues back in your classrooms.
