Real World Math--Release Party

Facing the Future would like you to join them on Monday, May 11th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the 2100 Building in Seattle to celebrate the release of our latest textbook: Real World Math: Engaging Students through Global Issues.

All teachers attending this event will receive a complimentary copy of the
Real World Math teacher's guide. The 15 lessons, data sets, problems and supplemental materials on foundational algebra and geometry build mathematics knowledge along with the important skills of critical thinking, collaboration, and global perspective. Classroom activities, real world data sets, topical readings, and action project resources engage students in contextual math around issues like climate change, financial literacy, and global health.

A short program will begin at 5:45p.m. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided. For questions about the event and to RSVP by May 4th, email Sheeba Jacob
or call 206-264-1503.

Facing the Future is a national non-profit education organization based in Seattle. For more information about Facing the Future, visit here

Videos of Young Environmental Heroes

1000 Voices Archive includes stories that remind us that good, focused environmental work continues. The 1000 Voices Archive, produced and promoted by Creative Counsel, is a significant video collection of 1000 stories of real activist heroes who demonstrate their values through their actions each and every day.

At Earth Island, we are pleased to present 9 inspiring leaders from the environmental movement, all of whom were under 23 when they won the Brower Youth Award for their work. Watch short films about leaders like Erica Fernandez, a 16-year-old Latina who successfully opposed a multi-billion dollar liquified natural gas facility off her coast or Ivan Stiefel who helps organize youth for a better environment in Appalachia.

Earth Day Photo Contest

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) is holding an Earth Day photo contest, asking middle school students to capture the changes in their local environment.

Between April 22-29, 2009, student participants will take a photograph of something that is changing in their local environment, whether it's in the backyard, outside the school, in a local park, or off in the distance toward the horizon. Students will then research and write an explanation of the photograph (400 words or less).

The top three winners will receive a digital camera, digital photo frame and digital photo keychain, respectively. Entries must be received by e-mail or postmarked by May 9. Winners will be announced on the IGES Web site around June 2, 2009.

For more instructions, visit here.
