Writing from Your Body Workshop

My very good friend Courtney is hosting this wonderful workshop. Check it out!

Writing from Your Body July 27, 1:00-5:00pm
Do you feel and hear all that your body has to tell you? Imagine feeling more connected to your body's messages. Imagine tapping into your inner wisdom and creativity, letting go of doubt and fear. By engaging in body-centered writing exercises, we will explore how our bodies can help us to understand in a deep and meaningful way how we relate to ourselves and how we engage with the big, wide world around us.

In Writing from Your Body, we will explore the ways in which paying attention to our bodies can enhance our writing and our writing process. We will write from our guts, our hands, our spleens, and our blood vessels. We will explore how telling the story of our bodies can help us to reclaim our creative, knowledgeable, and truth-telling physical selves.

This workshop series is facilitated by Courtney Putnam, MFA, LMP and will be held at Rising Bird Healing Arts in the lovely Roosevelt District of Seattle. To register email Courtney Putnam. For more information, click here. Cost: $100 (cash, check, and credit card accepted). Space is limited to 8 participants.

Day 1: Hazards on the Homefront
Sponsored by King County Solid Waste Division
Do you know what makes bleach more dangerous than vinegar? Or how to properly dispose of pesticide containers? Find out how everyday cleaning and gardening products impact human health and the environment and how to make safer choices. Learn hands-on scientific experiments related to the chemical hazards of household products. You will be skilled at activities that teach your students bioaccumulation, proper disposal, and the benefits of safer alternatives.

Day 2: Consumer Awareness: Personal Care Products Safety and Labeling
Presented by the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research (NWABR)
This workshop is made possible through funding from the Chiron Foundation.
How can you tell if a shampoo or lotion really does what it says it does? What does "Not Tested on Animals" really mean? Evaluating cosmetic claims requires an understanding of the science behind the ingredients and the regulations behind the labels and safety testing. This curriculum incorporates multiple aspects of science (biology, chemistry, toxicology, math), research (experimental design), and ethics (safety testing on animals and humans).

Test Drive Google Sky

A special two-day summer workshop is being offered to formal and informal educators who want to learn how to use Google Sky in their classrooms and/or out-of-school time programs. The workshop will take place July 21-22 at the University of Washington. The instructors are Tina Ornduff of Google and UW astronomers Andy Connolly, Simon Krughoff and Julie Lutz. The workshop itself is free; nine clock hours will be available for $15. Participants will learn how to customize Google Sky for different uses including presentations, student assignments and activities. Workshop content includes an in-depth introduction to what can be done directly with Google Sky (constellations, planets, multi-wavelength astronomy, etc.) and instruction in how to add content appropriate to a particular program and/or childrens' interests. There will be time for participants to practice doing modifications. To register or obtain more information, contact Julie Lutz.

Trillium

Along the trail to Taylor Creek/Snoqualmie Lake, I spotted a sure sign of spring: Trillium. A few were just buds. Most were blooming brilliant white. Several were already fading to pink. Spring is here and almost gone, both at the same time.
