Diversity in the Outdoors event, March 13th

Dudley Edmonson and Shirley McGill are coming to Seattle March 11th -14th to speak about people of color in the outdoors. Dudley is an award winning nature photographer and recently published the book Black and Brown Faces in America's Wild Places which is a compilation of 20 or so interviews with African American's who work careers in the outdoors. Shirley is a diversity consultant for Outward Bound and passionate educator and has started a number of outdoor education programs for urban youth in Boston and New York City.

Polar Science Weekend at Pacific Science Center

Coming up on March 6-9, Pacific Science Center and the Polar Science Center at the University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratory are teaming up once again to bring you a weekend of exciting, highly-interactive science that's too cool to miss! Guests of all ages will learn about the mysterious environments that only exist at the remote edges of our planet through hands-on activities, engaging demonstrations, lectures, exhibits and more.

  • Discover the many diverse careers in the world of polar science while meeting some of the researchers who make this their life's work.
  • Learn about the newest technology that's aiding research and what it's teaching us about the complex environments of the Arctic and Antarctic.
  • Step inside a real research hut and check out the gear worn by polar researchers.
  • And this is just the tip of the iceberg!

Admission to the event is free with paid admission to Pacific Science Center.

Women Fly at the Museum of Flight

In celebration of the significant contributions women have made in the fields of aviation and aerospace and to give women ages 13-19 the opportunity to explore careers in these fields, The Museum of Flight presents its sixth annual "Women Fly!" program on MARCH 7, 2008.

Women Fly! offers young women the opportunity to interact with successful, professional women in the aviation and aerospace fields. Participants will participate in workshops such as touring the King County International Airport and trying their hand at flying in the simulators in the Museum's Aviation Learning Center. Afterwards they will enjoy a networking lunch, meet professional women from the aviation and aerospace fields, and much more!

Teaching about Climate Change Workshop

Saturday, April 19, 2008 (8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) and Sunday, April 20, 2008 for the National Geographic Live! evening presentation "The Challenge of Climate Change" with Dennis Dimick. Most appropriate for teachers of grades 3-12.

Join Woodland Park Zoo, National Wildlife Federation and Facing the Future to gain new strategies and resources for engaging students in exploring the environmental, economic, political and social issues related to climate change at developmentally-appropriate levels. Empower students to reach their own conclusions and take action on solutions they develop. Participants in this workshop will experience activities and learn about action and service-learning projects from National Wildlife Federation's Climate Classroom and Facing the Future's new climate change curriculum.


Cost: $10 materials fee. Clock hours (10) and credit (one graduate quarter credit) will be available.

Free Educational Resources from Federal Agencies

What's not to like about FREE? Free Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE) is a database of free lesson plans, animations, websites, and other great teaching tools created by federal agencies. There are resources for every discipline, for science and beyond.

Free Climate Change Curriculum & Camera Grant

FREE Climate Change Curriculum & Cameras Available to Document Climate Change Solutions

Facing the Future is
pleased to announce the release of Climate Change: Connections and Solutions. These 2-week curriculum units, one for middle and one for high school, encourage students to think critically about climate change and to collaborate to devise solutions. Students learn about climate change within a systems framework, examining interconnections among environmental, social, and economic issues.

Through a generous grant from Hewlett-Packard Company, Facing the Future also invites you to apply for a
Climate Change Camera Grant. Beginning now through March 7th, Facing the Future will be accepting applications from U.S. educators to receive one of 30 classroom sets of 5 HP Photosmart R847Digital Cameras.

Facing the Future staff is available to come to your school or district to provide a workshop on this resource or other global sustainability curriculum. For

Total Lunar Eclipse--Feb 20th

Mark your calendars for this sensational lunar event. On Wednesday night, February 20th, a total eclipse of the Moon will occur. If the weather cooperates, it will be visible from North America. In the Pacific Standard Time Zone, the show will begin at 5:43 pm and end by 9:09pm.

A lunar eclipse is an excellent teaching opportunity for your students, children, or yourself! NASA's Lunar Eclipse website has lots of good information to get you started learning.

Rediscovery Environmental Educators' Institute

Nothing recharges me like going outside to play some of my favorite nature awareness games, like Deer Ears and Camera. When I was an environmental education undergraduate at Western Washington University, we learned many of the Rediscovery games and activites. Now here is your chance to train with Thom Henley, who is coming to Everett to offer this workshop in May and July. See below for all the juicy details.

Rediscovery / As If the Earth Matters: An Environmental Educators Institute
The Rediscovery Environmental Educators Institute with Thom Henley offers educators a rare opportunity to fully immerse themselves in experiential learning skills, to develop keener insights into cross-cultural understanding and to discover new ways to bring environmental concepts and lessons into the classroom. Thom will draw from his extensive travel experiences and 30 years of working with youth on Rediscovery programs
to provide an indoor/outdoor workshop that is both insightful and stimulating.

Thom Henley has formally lectured and conducted Rediscovery Workshops in 26 countries. This training event in Washington State promises to be an unforgettable and inspirational experience for all who take part!

Two Class Dates: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday-Thursday, May 21-22, 2008 OR Thursday-Friday, July 17-18, 2008
Location: The Northwest Stream Center in Snohomish County's McCollum Park. Driving directions and map available at www.streamkeeper.org.
Applications/Registration: Call 425-316-8592 for an application. Lunch for both days is included with $150 registration fee. Class size is limited to 40 educators.
Credit Options: WWU (2 credits) and the WSTA (16 clock hours). Additional fees are required.

Arctic Adventure Lecture Series--Free!

Arctic Adventure! Ocean Tales of Currents and Creatures
Please join the UW College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences and the UW Alumni Association for this exciting lecture series focusing on the research of COFS scientists in the Arctic. Learn what it's like to live and work in this remote, inhospitable and ever-changing part of the world!


Location: Kane Hall, Room 210, UW Seattle campus, Seattle, WA.
Time: Each lecture starts at 7 p.m.
