Day 1: Hazards on the Homefront
Sponsored by King County Solid Waste Division
Do you know what makes bleach more dangerous than vinegar? Or how to properly dispose of pesticide containers? Find out how everyday cleaning and gardening products impact human health and the environment and how to make safer choices. Learn hands-on scientific experiments related to the chemical hazards of household products. You will be skilled at activities that teach your students bioaccumulation, proper disposal, and the benefits of safer alternatives.

Day 2: Consumer Awareness: Personal Care Products Safety and Labeling
Presented by the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research (NWABR)
This workshop is made possible through funding from the Chiron Foundation.
How can you tell if a shampoo or lotion really does what it says it does? What does "Not Tested on Animals" really mean? Evaluating cosmetic claims requires an understanding of the science behind the ingredients and the regulations behind the labels and safety testing. This curriculum incorporates multiple aspects of science (biology, chemistry, toxicology, math), research (experimental design), and ethics (safety testing on animals and humans).
